Last night saw the first broadcast of Doctor Who star Matt Smith’s directorial debut Cargese, a gritty tale of squalor, loss and violence. But don’t let that put you off.

Matt Smith is the star of Doctor Who

Matt spoke to the Telegraph recently, mostly about the project (although as you will see later, there is mention of Ryan Gosling’s How to Catch a Monster too.) It seems that the Doctor Who star is quite ambitious when it comes to directing, observing that:

“I’d like to direct a science-fiction film, too. Kubrick’s the man to follow: a film in every genre.”

Of working on Cargese, Smith recalls that he had wanted to work with the writer, Simon Stephens, for some time.

“It wasn’t a conscious choice. I just wanted to work with Simon, who’s a brilliant writer, and that’s the tone of his work. But I like that type of filmmaking. I loved Tyrannosaur. I loved Shame. I like big, square, flat, wide frames and I think, doing the day job I do, it’s just a different emotional context to explore; you can film it in a different way to Doctor Who.”

“The script that Simon and me worked on happened to be quite a bleak one, but hopefully there are moments when you find something in the character… I wanted there to be a magic about Stephen; somehow you’ve got to fall in love with a boy that murders someone innocent.”

Cargese aired on Thursday evening on Sky Arts 1. It has received some positive reviews:
